KARACHI: Following a top police official’s assurance that more arrests would be made, a protest, that lasted for several hours on Karachi’s National Highway, over the savage rape and murder of a six-year-old girl was called off on Wednesday.

Two suspects are in police custody so far.

The minor had gone missing three days ago while stepping outside her home in Bin Qasim Town’s Data Nagar neighborhood and her body was recovered from the drain of the Steel Town area on Wednesday, Bin Qasim Station House Officer (SHO) Fahadul Hasan was quoted as saying in Dawn.com.

He further said her relatives had lodged a first information report (FIR) on Feb 28 and two suspects — neighbors of the victim — have been taken into custody for interrogation.

He continued by saying that the witnesses helped the police find both suspects, who were then detained. One of the suspects was a relative and the girl’s neighbor, the police officer said, adding that they were all being investigated.

He cited a case from November of last year in the Quaidabad neighborhood where the victim’s neighbor and family were also suspects.

The girl’s body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre to fulfil legal formalities. Police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed confirmed that the little girl was raped.

Late on Wednesday night, protests over the girl’s horrible murder by family members and PTI workers near Steel Town Morr blocked the National Highway.

According to witnesses, the demonstrators blocked the roadway for around four hours while demanding the swift arrest of the offenders and setting old tyres on fire.

Malir SSP Hassan Sardar held talks with the protesters at the location and regretted the minor girl’s cruel murder.

PTI Karachi leader Dr Masroor Siyal, who led the protest, told the media they ended the protest over assurances given by the Malir SSP that the culprits would be arrested within 24 hours.
