Clive Stafford Smith, the attorney representing Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, who is currently imprisoned in the United States, has stated that she was raped twice by Afghan soldiers while held in an Afghan prison.
Speaking at a conference in Islamabad, Smith said that Dr. Siddiqui was abducted with the cooperation and facilitation of governmental authorities.
He emphasized that she is currently being kept in extremely harsh conditions and is being denied access to proper medical care.
According to Smith, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) believes Dr. Siddiqui is a nuclear scientist capable of building a nuclear bomb.
He also noted that his visit to Pakistan includes work on cases beyond that of Dr. Siddiqui. “I came here in 2015 when people were being killed in U.S. strikes in Afghanistan. I am grateful for the opportunity to advocate for the victims of enforced disappearances,” he added.
Commenting on the infamous Guantanamo Bay detention facility, Smith claimed that 73% of the detainees held there were later found to be innocent.
“It is widely known that even the most dangerous prisoners are kept at Guantanamo Bay,” he remarked.
