The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has dismissed a plea by dissident PTI member Akbar S. Babar, who sought a rerun of the party’s internal election.
Babar claimed that the election held on December 2 was invalid. The ECP rejected the request, stating that a rerun was not a viable option. However, the ECP accepted other petitions related to the intra-party election and scheduled a hearing for December 12.
A member of the ECP from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa emphasized the clarity of Section 215 of the Election Commission Act on the matter and highlighted potential consequences for failing to conduct intra-party elections. During the hearing, Akbar S. Babar argued that the December 2 election was fraudulent and urged a fresh election under ECP supervision.
Earlier, a petition challenging the PTI’s intra-party election, where Barrister Gohar Khan replaced Imran Khan as the party chairman, was filed with the ECP. The petition claimed that the intra-party elections did not adhere to constitutional provisions. This development follows Akbar S. Babar’s statement, expressing his intention to contest the PTI’s intra-party election.
Despite the plea for a rerun, the ECP maintained its decision, asserting that there was no basis for conducting the intra-party election again.
