With 1923 wrapping up its dramatic run, fans of the Yellowstone universe are already turning their attention to the next chapter: a new prequel reportedly titled “1944”.
Following the critical and commercial success of Yellowstone, creator Taylor Sheridan expanded the Dutton saga with 1883 and 1923, each exploring different generations of the family’s storied past.
1883 introduced the Duttons who journeyed west to settle in Montana, founding what would become the Yellowstone Ranch. 1923 followed the next generation, embroiled in battles to preserve their land and legacy. Naturally, 1944 is set to continue this lineage, potentially focusing on the Duttons during World War II.

Announced alongside news of Yellowstone’s conclusion, 1944 is expected to unfold in Montana during the height of the war. While plot details remain under wraps, the time period suggests the series may incorporate major historical events into its storyline, staying true to the franchise’s signature blend of personal drama and national history.
Though casting has not been confirmed, the proximity to 1923—set just two decades earlier—raises the possibility that characters such as Jack Dutton, Elizabeth, Spencer, and Alexandra could reappear as older versions of themselves. With both Elizabeth and Alexandra shown to be pregnant in 1923, the next generation of Duttons is already in place.
As of now, 1944 has no official release date, likely due to 1923’s finale airing just recently on April 13, 2025.
