A recent study conducted in China has unveiled significant connections between the consumption of milk tea, addiction, and mental health issues among young people.
Key findings
Published in the Journal of Affective Disorders last November, the study indicates that the consumption of milk tea may result in addiction symptoms, including cravings, dependency, an inability to stop, and feelings of guilt. The research establishes a clear correlation, indicating that higher levels of addiction are significantly linked to an increased risk of anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.
Study methodology
Researchers from Tsinghua University and the Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing conducted surveys on 5,281 students in the Chinese capital. Almost half of the participants reported drinking at least one cup of milk tea per week. To assess addiction levels, the researchers created a milk tea addiction scale based on guidelines from the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Participants also reported symptoms related to anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.
Researcher insights
The authors of the study speculate that young individuals may turn to milk tea as a coping mechanism or a way to regulate emotions. They suggest that addiction to this sugary beverage could be as harmful as addiction to social media or drugs.
Future research directions
The study proposes future investigations with larger sample sizes and longer tracking periods to better understand the relationship between milk tea consumption and mental health. The researchers advocate for additional regulations to safeguard against the physical and mental health issues associated with this popular beverage.
