Celebrated designer Maria B has addressed allegations regarding the use of a painting by a Turkish artist girl in her new collection.
In a video on Instagram, Maria B explained that she discovered the painting randomly on the internet. She reached out to the artist and paid her for using the artwork, despite the artist’s initial refusal. Maria B further revealed that when she contacted the artist, she discovered that the artist was a strong supporter of Gaza and Palestine and was aware of Maria B’s work. “She said she knew it was a mistake,” Maria B added.
Maria B also mentioned that she plans to visit Istanbul to meet the artist in person and will share photos of their meeting.

It is important to note that Maria B’s new collection, which features the colors of the Palestinian flag—red, white, black, and green—includes prints resembling the traditional Palestinian keffiyeh. In her launch post, Maria B wrote: “Freedom and Unity. Presenting a collection that holds a special place in my heart, a tribute to the enduring spirit of our Ummah. Falasteen. Inspired by those who stand tall, this collection embodies unity and strength. Launching online and in stores tomorrow… All of the proceeds from the campaign will be donated to Palestine.”
Activist Leena Ghani took to Instagram to allege that Maria B appropriated the design from an artist, noting that the original artwork was seen on a Canadian page dedicated to Palestinian solidarity. The same artwork appeared on a shirt from Maria B’s two-piece printed lawn collection.
