The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has proposed an increase in municipal charges.
According to officials, the revised municipal tax proposal will be presented in the City Council, with authorities describing the increase as a “modest adjustment” aimed at improving urban services across the city.
The officials stated that the revenue generated from these charges will be spent on enhancing civic amenities. However, citizens who consume up to 50 electricity units per month will be exempt from paying the municipal tax.
As per the proposal, consumers using 51 to 200 electricity units per month will pay Rs50, reflecting an increase of Rs30.
Those using 201 to 300 units will pay Rs100, after an increase of Rs50.
Consumers falling in the 301 to 400 units bracket will be charged Rs200, up by Rs100.
Users of 401 to 500 units will pay Rs225, following a Rs100 hike.
For 501 to 600 units, the proposed charge is Rs275, with an increase of Rs125.
601 to 700 units users will pay PRs300, also with a Rs125 increment.
Those using more than 700 units will be required to pay Rs750, after a Rs450 increase.
In addition, KMC has proposed fixed municipal charges for various consumer categories:
General services: Rs600
Commercial consumers: Rs550
Industrial consumers: Rs750
The proposal will undergo review in the City Council before implementation, and officials maintain that the adjustments are essential to support city-wide development and service delivery initiatives.
