Spotify users across the globe faced a major disruption on Wednesday, with tens of thousands reporting that they were unable to stream music through the app.
According to outage-tracking site Downdetector, more than 20,000 users reported issues around 13:30 GMT, with the number growing steadily in the UK, US, and parts of Europe.
Spotify acknowledged the issue by saying it was “aware of the outage” and was “working to resolve it as soon as possible.” The company dismissed rumors of a security breach, calling them “completely inaccurate.”
While downloaded music remained accessible offline, users were unable to search for new songs or access artist pages. The app frequently displayed error messages such as “Something went wrong”, prompting frustration from users.
Spotify directed users to its official @SpotifyStatus X (Twitter) account for real-time updates.
With over 675 million users worldwide, the platform saw widespread complaints, with some jokingly begging for a fix as the outage disrupted workouts, study sessions, and daily routines.
Others threatened to switch to rival platforms like Apple Music or YouTube Music.
