ISLAMABAD: Pakistan reported a rapid increase in the number of cases and deaths on Thursday as the nation continues its fight against a deadly fourth wave of the coronavirus.
The latest figures from the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) reported 5,661 cases and 60 deaths in the previous 24-hour period. The national tally of coronavirus cases has reached 1,053,660 while the death toll stands at 23,635.
According to the official portal, the positivity ratio was recorded at 9.06%, the highest in nearly three months. The country last recorded a coronavirus positivity rate of 9.12% on May 10.
There were 62,462 tests conducted in the previous day leading to new cases. The number of active cases in the country has also increased to 77,409 amid the worsening condition and surge in cases.
There are 4,050 people who remain in critical condition in 192 new patients in the previous day. Overall 952,616 people have recovered from the virus, including 6,787 in the past day.
Sindh has recorded the highest number of cases and remains the worst affected region. The province has recorded 392,433 cases and 6,098 deaths while the number of active cases has reached 46,956.
Punjab has recorded 360,494 cases and 11,122 deaths, while the number of active cases in the province has reached 15,067. Islamabad has recorded 89,177 cases and 807 deaths while there are 4,392 active cases in the federal capital.
The number of cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stands at 146,485 and 4,495 deaths while Balochistan has recorded 30,880 cases and 329 deaths. Gilgit Baltistan had recorded 8,473 cases and 148 deaths while Azad Kashmir has recorded 25,778 cases and 636 deaths.
Sindh is currently under a lockdown till August 8 to control the worsening situation amid the pandemic. The governments of Punjab and Azad Kashmir have imposed a partial lockdown. Punjab has imposed a targeted lockdown in various cities including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan and Faisalabad.
