DUBAI: Qatar’s attorney general has ordered the arrest of Finance Minister Ali Shareef al-Emadi over allegations of embezzlement, abuse of power and crimes related to the public sector, according to state media.
“After reviewing documents, and their attached reports, Attorney General ordered the arrest of the Minister of Finance Ali Sharif Al-Emadi to investigate what was mentioned in the reports of crimes related to practicing public office,” an official statement added.
The official Qatar News Agency said that an investigation had been launched, but did not give any further details. Al-Emadi has been serving as Qatar’s finance minister since 2013.
He is also the executive chairman of Qatar Airways and chairman of the board of the Qatar Investment Authority. Al-Emadi steered Qatar’s economic policies during the 2014-15 oil price crash that prompted the tiny nation – as well as other Gulf countries – to accelerate plans to diversify the economy.
