Australian MP Brittany Lauga has come forward with disturbing allegations of being drugged and sexually assaulted in the central Queensland town of Yeppoon over the weekend.
Lauga made a statement on social media, revealing that she reached out to the police in the early hours of April 28 after becoming aware of the incident.
Tests conducted at the hospital confirmed the presence of drugs in her body, substances she insists she did not consume. Lauga emphasized the significant impact of these drugs on her well-being. Furthermore, she disclosed that several other women from the town have reached out to her, sharing similar harrowing experiences. Lauga expressed her concern, stating that such incidents are not isolated and can happen to anyone.
In a poignant plea for action, Lauga stressed the importance of creating a safe environment for socializing in the town, devoid of the looming threat of drug-induced assaults. The circulation of a video purportedly depicting the alleged assault, reportedly filmed from across the street, has only added to the distress. Lauga became aware of the video shortly after reporting the incident to the police.
The Queensland Police Service has confirmed an investigation into the sexual assault complaint linked to the incident in Yeppoon. Queensland Premier Steven Miles has assured that the government stands behind Lauga, offering support in any way possible
