In a bizarre turn of events despite the opposition of child marriages in Pakistan, a 13-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl are getting married.
Who is the couple? How did their parents allow them to get married at such a young age? Hailing from Karachi, an unnamed boy who is 13 years old got engaged and is set to get married to a 12-year-old girl.
It was the boy who expressed an urgent demand to his parents to be formally engaged to his classmate, or else he would end his studies if his wish were not granted.
The couple’s ‘Baat Pakki’ event was held this last week and since it has become the talk of the town.
As per the girl’s mother, she was married at the age of 16 so, she does not mind if her daughter gets hitched at the age of 12.
On the other hand, the groom’s mother was married at the age of 25 but she wants to get her son married soon. Moreover, the groom has already planned many kids and he will be gifting his wife an iPhone 15.
This quite bizarre news has shocked many Pakistanis including celebrities. Some are in favour of it as it’s allowed in the religion, however, many of the users believe it’s the negative impact of promoting child marriages/child love relationships being shown in dramas nowadays.
What does Pakistani law say about child marriage?
In Pakistan, the legal marriage age for males is 18, but for females, it remains 16 despite the minimum age for both genders being recognized as 18 internationally. While Sindh province did pass legislation in 2013 to raise the minimum age of marriage to 18 for both genders, this change has not been implemented nationwide.
