The power tariff is anticipated to see an increase as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has formally requested the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to raise the electricity rate by Rs 7.13/unit, citing fuel price adjustments.
NEPRA is scheduled to review the petition today, focusing on the proposed increase for the month, considering fuel price adjustments related to electricity consumed in January.
The CPPA’s submission to NEPRA highlighted that 11.12 percent of total power generation in January came from hydropower plants, 16.51 percent from coal-fired plants, 12.45 percent from natural gas, and 20.78 percent from nuclear plants.
If approved, the tariff hike will place an additional burden of Rs 66 billion on power consumers already grappling with escalated power rates.
This development follows a recent decision by NEPRA to increase the electricity tariff by Rs 5.63 per unit based on monthly fuel adjustments. This decision, made after a hearing on CPPA’s petition for a tariff hike in December 2023, is expected to impose an extra cost of Rs 49 billion on power consumers, impacting upcoming electricity bills.
It’s noteworthy that NEPRA, at the behest of the caretaker government, greenlit the tariff hike to maintain a uniform electricity tariff across the country. The upcoming decision will further shape the landscape of power costs in the country.
