Donations for Teen Hatti slum fire victims being sold in the market

KARACHI: The relief goods sent for fire-affected people of Karachi’s Teen Hatti are being sold in the market.

 According to the reports, people who resided in the tent homes before the fire engulfed it, are being deprived of relief food items and regular use products being donated by the common citizens are being stolen.

A huge cache of relief goods including, commodities and basic amenity items were given to the people after a fire gutted more than 150 huts in the place.

Sources have revealed that the donations are regularly appearing in nearby shops. Upon inquiry, it was revealed that the items were being sold by middlemen tasked by the government to provide relief goods to the displaced individuals and families.

The residents of the burnt down slum have urged people wanting to donate, to hand them the items to the person they want to help, rather than handing the items down to Sindh government officials.

On January 21, according to fire brigade officials, a massive fire broke out in the slums located beneath Teen Hatti Bridge. As a result, two people sustained injuries and more than 150 huts were gutted.

Soon after the incident, three fire brigade vehicles, rescue teams and a huge contingent of police, rangers reached the scene and brought the fire under control after a hectic effort of two hours.
