Aamir Khan’s film Sitaare Zameen Par has surpassed the total earnings of Laal Singh Chaddha by earning 600 million rupees (Rs60 crore) within just four days of its release.
According to Indian media, Aamir Khan publicly announced that he would not be releasing Sitaare Zameen Par on any streaming platform immediately, which resulted in a remarkable success at the box office.
Directed by R.S. Prasanna, this coming-of-age sports comedy crossed the Rs60 crore mark at the domestic box office within only four days. On Monday, the fourth day of its release, the film’s earnings dropped to single digits for the first time.
However, the film performed beyond expectations at the end of its opening weekend. On that day, it earned Rs8.5 crore, slightly less than its opening day earnings of Rs10.7 crore. Over the weekend, the film earned Rs20.2 crore on Saturday and Rs27.25 crore on Sunday.
The total revenue for its opening weekend stood at Rs58.15 crore, easily surpassing the Rs50 crore milestone in three days. Despite the significant drop on Monday, Sitaare Zameen Par not only passed the crucial Monday test but also overtook the total domestic box office revenue of Aamir’s previous film, Laal Singh Chaddha, which was directed by Advait Chandan and released in 2022.
Indian media believes that due to the lack of any major competing film for the next three days, Sitaare Zameen Par may surpass Rs100 crore in earnings by the end of this week. On Friday, June 27, it will face competition from Vishal Furia’s fantasy horror film Maa, starring Kajol, which is related to the background of her husband Ajay Devgn’s hit film Shaitaan from last year.
In an interview given to SCREEN before the film’s release, Aamir said, “Right now at the box office, it’s either a drought or a festival. Either films are doing no business at all, or the few that people like are soaring and earning more than Rs500 crore. The middle ground has vanished. Why? Because I’m watching them on Netflix or Amazon.”
Aamir Khan further said, “That’s why I decided to release Sitaare Zameen Par only in cinemas. It will be available on television or streaming only a year later. My loyalty lies with cinema halls, and I have faith in my audience.”
