A woman was shot dead following a jirga’s decision over allegations of karo kari (honour killing) in Khairpur, Sindh, prompting an immediate police action after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
According to police, on April 10, a woman identified as Khalida Chandio was allegedly killed near Tando Masti under the orders of a jirga.
Following the emergence of the video, panic gripped the area, and it triggered widespread outrage on social media.
Police officials said a case has been registered against four individuals. Two suspects have been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accused.
Meanwhile, Sindh Minister for Women Development Shaheena Sher Ali has taken notice of the incident. She condemned the brutal killing in the name of so-called honour, calling it deeply tragic and reprehensible.
She also expressed concern over the silence of local residents who remained mere spectators.
It is worth mentioning that honor killings ordered by jirgas (tribal councils) remain a persistent and illegal practice in Pakistan. Despite being formally abolished by the 25th Constitutional Amendment in 2018 and declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, these councils continue to operate as a parallel justice system in many rural and tribal areas.
