US Navy confirms $238m Northrop Grumman Triton drone crash near Hormuz

WASHINGTON: The United States Navy has officially confirmed the loss of an MQ-4C Triton high-altitude surveillance drone, manufactured by Northrop Grumman, following its disappearance from flight-tracking radars over the Persian Gulf last week.

The incident, which occurred on April 9, has been formally classified as a “Class A mishap.”

While the Naval Safety Command reported no injuries to personnel, the crash represents a significant hit to US maritime surveillance capacity. The Northrop Grumman-produced aircraft is valued at approximately $238 million (approx. Rs66.3 billion) per unit, making it one of the most expensive uncrewed assets in the Pentagon’s inventory.

According to official summaries, the drone was operating in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz when it experienced a sudden and catastrophic loss of altitude, plunging from a cruising height of 50,000 feet to below 10,000 feet. Before contact was lost, the aircraft’s transponder broadcasted an emergency “7700” code, signaling an in-flight crisis.

Northrop Grumman, the prime contractor for the Triton program, designed the MQ-4C specifically for long-endurance maritime intelligence. The aircraft is equipped with the company’s advanced multi-function active sensor (MFAS) radar, which allows it to monitor vast stretches of ocean in real-time. The Navy has not clarified whether Northrop Grumman technical teams will be involved in the recovery or the subsequent investigation into the cause of the “mishap.”

The timing of the crash is particularly sensitive given the ongoing regional volatility and the strategic importance of the Persian Gulf trade routes. The loss reduces the Navy’s active Triton fleet to 19 operational units, though Northrop Grumman remains under contract to deliver additional airframes to meet the original fleet requirement of 68 aircraft.

Military observers noted that after a brief operational pause following the April 9 incident, another Northrop Grumman-built Triton was spotted conducting a mission in the same region today, indicating that the US Navy has resumed its persistent surveillance patrols over the strategic waterway.
