At least three people have died and several others have fallen ill following a suspected outbreak of Hantavirus aboard a cruise ship sailing in the Atlantic Ocean, the World Health Organization said on Sunday.
The fatalities were reported among passengers on the MV Hondius, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions. The vessel is currently anchored in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde.
According to authorities, passengers will not be permitted to disembark as a precautionary measure. Health officials from Cape Verde have boarded the ship to assess the situation, including two crew members reported to be showing symptoms and requiring urgent medical care.

What is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious viral infection primarily transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents, their urine, droppings, or saliva. In some cases, it can spread through inhalation of airborne particles contaminated by rodent waste.
The virus can cause severe respiratory illness known as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which may lead to symptoms such as fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, it can be fatal if not treated promptly.
