Tensions escalated sharply in the Strait of Hormuz after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it struck a US Navy vessel near Jask Island on Monday.
According to the IRGC, two missiles were fired after the ship allegedly ignored repeated warnings to halt.
The incident comes just a day after US President Donald Trump announced a new naval initiative, “Project Freedom,” aimed at assisting stranded commercial vessels in the strategic waterway. The plan seeks to guide ships and their crews out of the Strait, where many have remained stuck for over two months amid ongoing conflict, facing shortages of food and essential supplies.
In a statement, Trump said the United States would ensure safe passage for affected vessels, allowing global trade to resume smoothly. However, Iran swiftly responded by warning that all maritime movement in the region must be coordinated with its armed forces.
Iranian officials reiterated that the security of the Strait lies under their control, cautioning ships against unauthorized navigation.
Since the conflict began, Iran has effectively restricted most shipping traffic in and out of the Gulf, disrupting nearly 20% of global oil and gas flows and pushing energy prices significantly higher.
Meanwhile, US Central Command signaled support for the mission, deploying thousands of personnel, aircraft, and naval assets to the region.
