Police have killed three arrested suspects linked to the murder of Dr Akash in an alleged encounter in Karachi.
According to police officials, the suspects were being taken for identification purposes when their alleged accomplices opened fire, leading to an exchange of gunfire in which the three suspects were killed.
According to local media reports, three suspects were killed and a police officer was injured during an alleged exchange of fire near Ahmed Brohi Goth in the Gulshan-e-Maymar area.
The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of police conducted a raid near Ahmed Brohi Goth, along the Northern Bypass, based on information provided by suspects arrested in connection with FIR No. 176/26 registered at the Freer Police Station. During the operation, the suspects’ accomplices allegedly opened fire on the police team.
During the exchange of gunfire, the three arrested suspects accompanying the police were critically injured and died before reaching the hospital. One police official was also wounded. The deceased and injured were shifted to Jinnah Hospital through ambulances.
SIU SHO Police Mumtaz Mehr said the three suspects killed in the encounter were involved in the Dr Akash murder case. Their arrest had been announced a few days earlier by DIG South Asad Raza during a press conference.
According to police, the suspects had allegedly killed Dr Akash by opening fire during a robbery attempt outside a bank in Clifton, when he resisted the snatching of cash.
The SIU SHO said the arrested suspects had been taken to Gulshan-e-Maymar for identification of their accomplices when their associates attacked the police party. During the ensuing exchange of fire, all three suspects were killed, while one police officer was injured.
Rescue officials identified the deceased as 24-year-old Suresh son of Amar Chand, 28-year-old Ram Chand son of Sono, and 22-year-old Anil son of Mir Chand. Police said the suspects belonged to the Odh community.
The injured police officer, Ali Jan, was also shifted to Jinnah Hospital, where his condition was reported to be out of danger. According to the SIU police spokesperson, a search operation is underway to arrest the suspects who managed to escape during the exchange of fire.
