LAHORE: Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has moved to quash speculation and rumours surrounding an alleged extension of school holidays, stating categorically that “no decision has been taken” by the provincial government to prolong closures beyond March 31.
His remarks come amid swirling social media reports suggesting holidays may be extended to April 15 as part of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s nationwide austerity measures aimed at conserving energy amid regional instability linked to the Iran conflict.
The minister issued a public appeal urging parents and citizens to disregard unverified claims circulating online. “Reports of extended holidays are baseless,” he emphasized, warning that misinformation could cause unnecessary disruption. “Until an official announcement is made through verified government channels, no action should be taken based on hearsay.”
While the Punjab government is reportedly reviewing several austerity proposals — including potential adjustments to school schedules — Minister Hayat stressed that none have been finalized. The current holiday period, running from March 16 to March 31, remains in effect as originally announced under the federal austerity campaign. Parents are advised to monitor official notifications from the Punjab Education Department for any future updates.
