Jakarta: A passenger ship carrying 243 people has gone missing in Indonesia after authorities lost contact with the vessel while it was sailing through the Java Sea.
According to international media reports, the ship was travelling from the city of Surabaya on Java Island to Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo, when communication with the vessel was lost.

Authorities said 103 people aboard the ship have been rescued, while one death has been confirmed.
According to Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Office, the vessel’s last known position was in the Java Sea, approximately 148 kilometres from a port in Banjarmasin. A search and rescue operation has been launched to locate the missing ship and account for those still unaccounted for.
Indonesian authorities said the vessel had reported encountering bad weather during its last communication with officials.
