OGDCL confirms Lithium discovery in geothermal formation water

ISLAMABAD: The Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has confirmed the presence of lithium in geothermal formation water at concentrations comparable to some of the world’s leading lithium-bearing brine projects, marking what the company describes as the first confirmed occurrence of its kind in Pakistan.

The discovery was made through advanced geochemical analysis of produced formation water recovered during the successful testing of a high-temperature geothermal well under OGDCL’s pilot geothermal program.

According to the company, the lithium concentrations detected are comparable to those found in higher-grade geothermal brines currently under commercial development in Europe and North America.

The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for the global energy transition.

Lithium has emerged as one of the world’s most strategically important minerals, underpinning the production of electric vehicle batteries, grid-scale energy storage systems and a broad range of clean-energy technologies.

As governments worldwide accelerate their shift towards low-carbon economies, global demand for lithium is projected to grow several-fold over the coming decade, placing countries with domestic resources in an increasingly advantageous position within global supply chains.

For OGDC, Pakistan’s largest exploration and production company, the discovery represents a significant diversification opportunity beyond its core oil and gas business. Also, it reflects a broader transformation underway across the global energy industry, in which traditional oil and gas companies are increasingly expanding into the critical minerals required to power the energy transition.

Notably, lithium extraction from geothermal brines is regarded as a more sustainable alternative to conventional hard-rock mining. The process can integrate renewable geothermal energy with direct lithium extraction technologies, potentially reducing both carbon emissions and environmental impacts compared to traditional extraction methods.

Company officials were careful to note that commercial lithium production remains subject to extensive further exploration, resource estimation and economic feasibility studies. Even so, they described the confirmation of internationally comparable lithium concentrations as an important scientific and strategic milestone for the country.

Should subsequent studies establish commercially recoverable resources, Pakistan could secure a place in the rapidly expanding global supply chain for critical minerals, at a time when governments and manufacturers around the world are actively working to diversify their sources of battery materials.
