KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab on Sunday said the city was “moving in the right direction” and urged critics to stop what he termed propaganda against the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-led local government.
Speaking to the media after inaugurating a sports complex in Landhi, the mayor said the PPP believed in serving citizens “without discrimination” and was committed to restoring Karachi’s former glory.
His remarks come amid persistent criticism of the city’s condition, with political opponents and even the PPP’s allies repeatedly questioning the performance of the provincial and local governments over Karachi’s deteriorating roads, infrastructure, sanitation and municipal services.
Murtaza Wahab, however, defended the government’s approach, saying the PPP’s intention was to work and bring about improvements in the city.
He also weighed in on the longstanding demand for the creation of new provinces, saying the issue should be addressed through parliament and in accordance with the Constitution.
“Leaving problems unresolved will not solve them,” he said, stressing that constitutional procedures should be followed in dealing with the provinces issue.
The mayor also linked political stability with economic progress, saying economic stability could not be achieved until political stability was established.

Referring to Karachi’s damaged roads, he said repair work would be undertaken after the rains.
The mayor reiterated that the PPP wanted to serve the people and improve conditions in Karachi, while calling for an end to what he described as negative propaganda against the city administration.
