Iran ‘prepares’ state funeral for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Iranian authorities are reportedly making preparations for a large-scale state funeral for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to state media reports released on Friday.

The ceremony has been delayed for several months due to the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

While an official date for the funeral has yet to be announced, Iranian state television reported that a special headquarters has been established in Tehran to oversee preparations. Various government institutions are said to be working to finalise arrangements for the event.

The development was confirmed by Mohsen Mahmoudi, head of the Tehran Coordination Council for Islamic Propagation, who said authorities are coordinating efforts to ensure the ceremony can be held on a large scale once a formal announcement is made.

Ayatollah Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic of Iran for more than three decades, was reportedly killed during the opening phase of the conflict on 28 February 2026. The hostilities between Iran, the United States and Israel subsequently escalated into a wider regional confrontation.

Reports indicate that his son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, was injured during the attacks and has not appeared publicly since assuming leadership.

State media noted that a memorial service for the late leader was held in April. However, the state funeral originally planned at the time was postponed because of the ongoing security situation and military developments.

According to Mahmoudi, preparations are being made to accommodate a significant public turnout, with authorities aiming to organise a funeral ceremony of national importance.

Although a ceasefire has largely remained in place since April, no comprehensive agreement has yet been reached to formally end the conflict, leaving uncertainty over the broader regional situation.
