KARACHI: Tea is one of the most popular beverages in Pakistan and across the world, with millions of people relying on a cup of tea to start their day. However, a new medical study suggests that the way tea is consumed, particularly its temperature, may have important implications for cardiovascular health.

The study, published in the Journal of Internal Medicine, examined the tea-drinking habits of more than 485,000 people aged between 30 and 79. Over a nine-year follow-up period, researchers investigated the relationship between tea consumption and cardiovascular health.

According to the reported findings, people who drank tea at least three times a week had an 11% lower risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes.

Researchers also highlighted the potential benefits of tea for people who do not smoke. Tea naturally contains polyphenols and other antioxidant compounds that may help support cardiovascular health. Some of these compounds have been associated with beneficial effects on blood pressure and blood vessel function.

Major Warning: Drinking Tea Too Hot May Carry Health Risks
One important consideration is the temperature at which tea is consumed. According to the reported findings, people who regularly drank very hot tea had a 16% higher risk of cardiovascular disease, rather than experiencing the same potential benefits associated with moderate tea consumption.

The findings suggest that allowing tea to cool to a comfortable, warm temperature before drinking it may be a sensible precaution. Extremely hot beverages can damage the tissues of the mouth and oesophagus, while regularly consuming scalding-hot drinks has been associated with health risks.

However, the findings should be interpreted cautiously. An association between tea consumption and cardiovascular health does not necessarily establish that tea itself directly causes a reduction or increase in disease risk. Other lifestyle factors may also influence the results.

What Should Tea Drinkers Keep in Mind?
Tea can be enjoyed as part of a balanced lifestyle, but moderation and temperature matter. Avoid drinking tea while it is scalding hot, limit added sugar where possible, and maintain other heart-healthy habits, including regular physical activity, a balanced diet and avoiding tobacco.
