Western parts of Afghanistan were hit by another earthquake on Sunday, days after a series of earthquakes killed over 1,000 people.
The United States Geological Survey said that the earthquake struck at 8:06 a.m. on Sunday. The magnitude was recorded at 6.3 on the Richter scale while the epicenter was 33 kilometres northwest of Herat.
The previous earthquake’s epicenter was 40km away from Herat, the largest city in western Afghanistan with a magnitude of 5.9 followed by up to eight aftershocks of magnitudes between 4.3 and 6.3.
Afghanistan refuses to accept Pakistan’s aid for earthquake victims
Videos from the aftermath had shown entire villages razed to the ground, with some at least 10 villages said to be flattened.
Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
The country is already in the grip of a grinding humanitarian crisis, following the widespread withdrawal of foreign aid since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
