The Honhaar Scholarship programme is set to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz today. The scholarship program has been described as the “largest” scholarship initiative in the province’s history.
The launch ceremony will take place at Punjab University.
The Honhaar Scholarship program will provide annual scholarships to over 30,000 students in over 68 disciplines, covering 65 government and private universities, 12 medical and dental colleges, and 359 colleges.
The program seeks to promote educational advancement and support students’ academic pursuits.
The program committee recently released the provisional merit lists for the Honhaar Scholarship Programme 2024. The lists are subject to verification of documents and the assessment of monthly family income based on edibility criteria.
The institutional examination and verification committee, along with the provisional scrutiny and the award committee, will conduct interviews and validate the documents of the selected candidates.
In public sector universities, an initial selection of over 20,566 applicants has been made, while the provisional merit list for the private sector institutions includes 4,820 pupils.
Over 1,367 applicants have been reportedly selected for the scholarship in medical and dental colleges, while over 3,247 students in HED colleges have also been awarded financial aid.
Under the Honhaar Scholarship program, 30,000 students will receive Rs130,000 per year, covering their education expenses for up to eight years.
The program aims to expand its reach, hoping to benefit over 4 million students in the next four years.
The target is to award a whopping 20 million scholarships. The program, however, has strict criteria to be eligible.
Applicants need to possess domicile from any district within Punjab only, should be below 22 years of age, and month income needs to be less than Rs300,000.
The applicants need to also be already enrolled in an educational institute in specified disciplines at designated universities or colleges for the fall session of 2024.
The scholarship is expected to cover the entire tuition fee of the selected candidate, with the Punjab government bearing the costs, providing financial support for students pursuing higher education in various fields.
