The BBC unveiled its prestigious 100 Women for 2024 list on Tuesday, featuring two of Pakistan’s most remarkable figures: singer-songwriter Hadiqa Kiani and activist-doctor Mahrang Baloch.
These trailblazing women joined a global lineup of extraordinary personalities, including astronaut Sunita Williams, rape survivor Gisèle Pelicot, and Nobel laureate Nadia Murad, highlighting their contributions to society and humanity.
Hadiqa Kiani
Kiani rose to stardom in the 1990s as a versatile vocalist and became a celebrated icon in South Asian pop music. Beyond her musical achievements, she is deeply committed to humanitarian work, serving as a United Nations Development Programme goodwill ambassador.
In response to Pakistan’s catastrophic 2022 floods, Kiani launched Vaseela-e-Raah, a project aimed at providing aid to victims in Balochistan and South Punjab. The initiative has supported displaced families and built 370 homes and facilities in affected areas.
Mahrang Baloch
A courageous advocate for human rights, Baloch has been at the forefront of protests against alleged enforced disappearances in Balochistan. In late 2023, she led a 1,600-km march to Islamabad, demanding answers about missing family members—a journey during which she was arrested twice.
Her activism under the Baloch Yakjehti (Unity) Committee has earned her recognition, including a spot on TIME’s 100 Next 2024 list of emerging leaders, solidifying her role as a champion for justice and equality. However, the government has shown significant resistance, condemning her actions on various occasions.
