ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has opposed the mortgaging of Islamabad’s biggest park, F-9 Park, for the issuance of Sukuk bonds, asking why such a proposal was tabled which gave the wrong impression.
He expressed his views while chairing a federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad today (Tuesday). Sources informed that it was proposed to mortgage Islamabad Club instead of F-9 Park. The Ministry of Finance will present a summary for the issuance of Sukuk bonds in exchange for the Islamabad Club.
Briefing on Sukuk bonds, the finance secretary said that the decision to issue Sukuk bonds were made to correct the mistakes made in the past. He said that it was just symbolic to mortgage F-9 park, in reality, it has no effect.
In response, the Prime Minister said, ” The park should not be mortgaged even symbolically which is for public use. This has given the wrong impression.” Meanwhile, the cabinet also approved the formation of an inquiry commission to investigate the Broadsheet scandal.
The federal cabinet held a detailed discussion on the Broadsheet scandal and approved the formation of a probing commission instead of a committee. It was decided that former Supreme Court judge, Justice (retd) Sheikh Azmat Saeed will head the commission.
It is important to mention that opposition parties, especially PML-N and PPP, had raised strong objections against the appointment of former SC justice as the chairman of investigating team citing a conflict of interest.
