KARACHI: Pakistani actress and model Sunita Marshall has spoken candidly about the bitter realities of married life and certain social attitudes toward women, saying that many men consider it normal to belittle or make fun of their wives in front of friends.
During a recent appearance on a television morning show, the actress claimed that around 98% of men in South Asian or “desi” societies make fun of their wives in the presence of friends.
Elaborating on her point, Marshall gave a common example: if a wife offers her husband a suggestion during a social gathering, some men immediately dismiss her in front of everyone or call her suggestion foolish.
According to Marshall, even when a husband disagrees with his wife, there is no need to embarrass or ridicule her publicly. She said the disagreement could instead be discussed privately or addressed later in a respectful manner.
The actress further suggested that one of the underlying reasons for this behaviour is the way some men are raised from childhood, where they may be taught, directly or indirectly, to view women or wives as being inferior to them.
Marshall’s remarks have since sparked discussion on social media, with users sharing their own experiences and opinions about respect, communication and behaviour within marriages.
Her comments have also reignited a broader conversation about social conditioning and the importance of treating partners with dignity, particularly in public settings.
