National interest necessitates crucial decision

Governments occasionally have to make judgments that the entire country finds surprising. However, national interest must always come first for any government, judiciary, and establishment.

On May 9, there was an attack on the Jinnah House, during which the criminals damaged the dignity of our country and destroyed several artifacts belonging to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the father of our country. The miscreants also desecrated the memorials of the martyrs of Pakistan including Captain Colonel Sher Khan.

The Tehreek-e-Insaf senators yesterday tabled a motion of condemnation in the Upper House, demonstrating the party’s awareness of the seriousness of the situation and its willingness to work with the administration to address the problems the nation is currently experiencing.

Meanwhile, it is nothing short of a disaster that more and more assembly members, senators, and former ministers are defecting from Tehreek-e-Insaf every day. It is essential that the previous ruling party recognizes and addresses its flaws.

Imran Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), recently said that the government should announce the election date when it believes that PTI has grown too weak to even take part in the polls. This is not less than an open challenge to Shehbaz Sharif’s administration.

Imran Khan’s remark makes it plain that, despite all of the apparent defeats, he believes that, if the general public is on his side, all of the PTI’s erstwhile members will soon flock back.

The administration must decide on the election date in order to put an end to the current political unrest in the country and transfer power to the party that the Pakistani people choose.

In terms of the national interest, this will be the government’s most significant choice since it will put an end to political uncertainty and better prepare the country to handle the historic economic issues. If this power battle continues, the country will further plunge into despair and chaos.
