ISLAMABAD: Karachi’s unannounced load-shedding and delays in repairing faulty electricity feeders were discussed in the National Assembly, where Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) MNA Syed Aminul Haque submitted a Calling Attention Notice and criticised K-Electric’s performance.
During a session chaired by Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, Aminul Haque alleged that K-Electric was generating substantial revenue through overbilling, while questions remained about its efforts to improve electricity generation and supply in Karachi.
He said nighttime power outages were causing difficulties for residents and questioned what measures the company was taking to improve its performance and provide relief to consumers.
Responding to the notice, Parliamentary Secretary Amir Talal Khan said power outages could increase due to maintenance work. He added that, under National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) regulations, load-shedding should not take place at night.
He assured the House that any reported violation would be examined. He also said that industrial feeders were not experiencing load-shedding.
Following the discussion, the Deputy Speaker referred the matter to the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Energy for further consideration.
