Islamabad: Justice Yahya Afridi has emerged as the government’s top pick for the next Chief Justice of Pakistan. However, speculation surrounds the constitutional implications if Justice Afridi declines the offer.

Renowned investigative journalist Ansar Abbasi, in a report published in The News, cited sources stating that Justice Aminuddin Khan would be the alternative option in case of Justice Afridi’s refusal.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, responding to a query, asserted that the parliamentary committee would make the final decision on the new Chief Justice.

“The President, Army Chief General Asim Munir, and I share a unified vision for political and economic stability,” the Prime Minister said, emphasizing the importance of constitutional amendments for national economic stability.

Following the 26th Constitutional Amendment’s implementation, outgoing Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial is required to nominate three senior judges by midnight today, from which the next Chief Justice will be selected.

A parliamentary committee has been formed for the Chief Justice’s appointment, with the National Assembly Secretariat issuing a notification confirming the committee’s formation.
