The Balochistan Yakjehti Committee (BYC), led by Mahrang Baloch, has been protesting in Gwadar for the rights of the people of Balochistan. Thousands of people, including women, have been participating in the protest, which has continued for several days.

On Sunday, at least three people were reported dead and several injured following violent clashes between protesters and security personnel. The violence erupted when security forces intercepted a convoy at the Talar check-post, leading to the deaths of two individuals and injuries to several others. Another person was killed and eight were injured in confrontations on Gwadar’s Marine Drive after authorities used teargas to disperse the gathering. Additionally, at least 20 people were arrested during the clashes.

The protesters in Balochistan are rallying for several key demands and grievances, which center around the following issues:

  1. Human Rights Violations: Protesters are condemning alleged highhandedness and brutality by the Pakistani government against the Baloch people. This includes claims of forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and general oppression of Baloch individuals and activists.
  2. Resource Exploitation: There are grievances regarding the exploitation of Balochistan’s natural resources without adequate benefits or compensation for the local population. The Baloch people are demanding greater control over and fair distribution of these resources.
  3. Lack of Basic Services: The protesters are voicing frustration over the lack of essential services, such as potable water and infrastructure development, in their region. This is seen as a form of neglect and marginalization by the central government.
  4. End to Military Operations: There is widespread anger over the military presence and operations in Balochistan. Protesters accuse the government of using excessive force and trying to suppress dissent through militarized actions.

According to the preliminary report, the incident was not caused by an air-conditioner compressor explosion or an electrical short circuit. Instead, the fire reportedly broke out after a nebulizer attached to an incubator, used to monitor oxygen levels, exploded.
