To avoid fatal road accidents and traffic congestion in Karachi, the authority has restricted thousands of water tankers from operating during rush hours.
Under the new rules, water tankers in Karachi are banned from operating between 7 AM to 10 AM and 6 PM to 9 PM, when traffic is at its peak. The restriction aims to ease congestion and enhance road safety.
The decision was made after a joint meeting between the traffic police and the transport department, following a rise in accidents involving heavy vehicles during peak hours.
In the initial phase, enforcement will focus on high-traffic areas such as Korangi, Malir, and West Karachi.
A special inspection team, comprising traffic police and transport officials, will monitor compliance. Tankers with more than ten wheels will only be allowed on roads after 11 PM to further reduce the risk of accidents.
The authorities will also scrutinize heavy vehicle drivers, checking their age, route permits, and fitness certificates. Underage or unlicensed drivers will face legal action. Daily reports from the inspection teams will help assess the effectiveness of the new measures.
The initiative is part of a larger effort to improve Karachi’s traffic management. Authorities are also considering public awareness campaigns and better traffic systems to address the challenges posed by heavy vehicles.
Regular inspections and enforcement will ensure compliance, creating a safer and more organized transportation network in the city.
