The Sindh government has declared May 1st as the public holiday throughout the province of Sindh on the occasion on Labor Day.
According to a notification, the public holiday will be for all the government offices, autonomous bodies, semi-autonomous bodies, corporations and local councils under the administrative control of the Sindh government except essential services.
The federal government and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) are also expected to announce a public holiday on May 1.
Labor Day, also known as May Day, was officially declared a national holiday in Pakistan in 1972, coinciding with the introduction of the country’s first labor policy. Since gaining independence in 1947, Pakistan has been a member of the International Labor Organization (ILO) and has ratified 36 ILO conventions, including eight core conventions.
The day is commemorated with various events such as rallies, processions, and union meetings. Seminars and street demonstrations are organized, where union leaders and civil society activists deliver speeches highlighting the significance of the day, the history of labor rights, and the ongoing struggles of workers. The occasion also serves as a moment of global solidarity, as participants express support for workers worldwide.
