The Sindh government has announced plans to introduce price controls on branded products sold at major supermarkets and superstores in Karachi to safeguard consumer rights and curb overcharging.
As per media reports, this move follows a high-level meeting led by Zahid Hussain Shar, Director General of the Bureau of Supply and Prices, where senior officials and retail sector representatives discussed the upcoming policy changes.
The authorities will begin gathering detailed data on the production costs and profit margins of these branded items.
During the session, Shar emphasized the need for all retail businesses to register and renew their warehouse licenses with the Bureau. He also stressed the government’s commitment to controlling the prices of essential commodities, preventing hoarding and profiteering, and enforcing fair pricing practices under the Consumer Protection Act.
Shar further explained that the implementation of the new pricing measures will be preceded by an extensive collection of cost and profit data. Once completed, the price regulations for branded goods will be rolled out next month.
