Pakistan has missed its wheat production target for the 2024-2025 Rabi season, with an estimated output of 28.42 million tons from 9.1 million hectares.
This is significantly lower than the target of 33.58 million tons set for the season, which was based on cultivating 10.368 million hectares of land.
Reports from provincial governments, shared during a Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) meeting led by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research (MNFS&R), Rana Tanveer Hussain, indicate that wheat production for the current season has decreased by 10% compared to last year.
At its previous meeting in November 2024, the FCA had set the wheat production target at 33.58 million tons for the Rabi season, hoping to cultivate the crop on an expanded area of 10.368 million hectares.
In addition to addressing wheat production, the FCA has also set production targets for key Kharif crops for the 2025-2026 season.
These include a rice production target of 9.17 million tons from 3 million hectares, 10.18 million bales of cotton from 2.2 million hectares, and 80.3 million tons of sugarcane from 1.1 million hectares. The committee also established production targets for maize, mung, mash, and chilies.
