The mystery surrounding the death of Karachi businessman Mir Raza Ali is growing more complex with each passing hour, as fresh questions emerge over the handling of his post-mortem examination.
Police Surgeon Dr. Summiya Syed has now flagged serious irregularities in the autopsy report, citing multiple forensic lapses and recommending further steps, including possible exhumation of the body, if required to determine the circumstances of his death.
In a letter addressed to the SP East, Dr. Summiya Syed pointed out major flaws in the post-mortem report prepared by Dr. Usama Sheikh.
In her letter, she says that no X-rays of the body were conducted, no chemical analysis was performed on the gunpowder residue found around the entry wound, and photographs were not taken in accordance with forensic standards.
She further reports that the report lacked a proper description of the entry and exit wounds based on bone markings.
The post-mortem report also recorded the entry wound as being significantly larger than the exit wound, making it necessary to re-examine and verify both injuries.
According to Dr. Summiya Syed, no hand swabs were collected to test for gunpowder residue, the nature and extent of the body’s decomposition were not clearly documented, and despite the face being unrecognizable, no DNA sample was obtained to confirm the deceased’s identity.
The letter also recommends exhumation of the body if deemed necessary for further investigation.
Meanwhile, Karachi Police Chief Azaad Khan earlier said that the police act on the basis of the medico-legal officer’s report. He added that if there were any issues with the report, they should have been corrected immediately.
