Petrol Dealers Fear a Fraud Under a New Fuel Relief Scheme

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) has expressed serious reservations about the government’s Fuel Relief Scheme, saying the proposed mechanism may be difficult for petrol station operators to implement effectively.

The association has warned that the use of digital IDs could create opportunities for fraudulent claims, potentially leaving dealers to bear the resulting financial losses. It also said that checking invoices individually could prove impractical at busy stations, where large numbers of motorcycles may be waiting for fuel. This, according to the association, could lead to lengthy queues and operational difficulties.

The PPDA has called on the government to finalise the scheme after consulting petrol dealers. It has also proposed that the relief payments be handled directly by the government or oil companies rather than making dealers responsible for the process.

Meanwhile, Inam-ul-Haq Chaudhry, Vice Chairman of the All Pakistan Petrol Pump Owners Association, has urged the government to clearly explain how the subsidy will work. He said petrol station owners had not been properly consulted and were already facing pressure on their working capital.

The petrol dealers have now called an emergency meeting to review the scheme, discuss their concerns and decide on their future course of action. The association said it would announce its next steps within 24 to 48 hours after the meeting and consultations.
