KARACHI: The Sindh government on Saturday successfully conducted the test drive of the Peoples Bus Service project ahead of the commercial launch.

Sindh Minister Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon took a ride from Model Colony till Avari Towers hotel on Sharah-e-Faisal, completing the travel in little less than an hour. Saeed Ghani and Waqar Mehdi also accompanied him.

The provincial government imported the buses from China which successfully completed over 29-kilometre journey without any hiccup.

Memon said under the Peoples’ Bus Service project, the Sindh government is set to ply 240 buses on seven different routes of Karachi and this is their test run.

“Out of total 250 buses 140 have arrived and the consignment of the rest of the vehicles is expected to arrive soon. Among these 250 buses, 240 buses would be running in Karachi while the remaining 10 buses would run in Larkana,” he added.

After more than 14 years of its rule, the PPP government in Sindh has managed to display some success in its civic administration by launching the public transport projects,

Memon took charge as transport minister last month and took a keen interest in completing several transport-related tasks pending for the past several months in his ministry within weeks.

Last month, a total of 49 buses for the Orange Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project and Intra-District Peoples Bus Service reached Karachi port.

Sindh Transport and Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon had said that the remaining buses were on the way and they would reach in different phases within one month.

Memon also held a meeting with TransKarachi, the company executing the project, and directed to initiate the construction work.

The provincial minister discussed issues faced with the project consultant, contractors and other transport department officials and ways to remove them.

He stressed that the project should be completed in two years. He said the Sindh government will extend full cooperation to TransKarachi and contractors.

The Orange Line BRT has been renamed as Abdul Sattar Edhi Line. The BRT Orange Line starts from TMA Orangi to Jinnah University for Women near the Board Office.
