Pakistan’s Boxer Shahir Afridi has won the World Boxing Council (WBC) Asia Middleweight title after beating Somphot Seesa today (Friday) in Bangkok, Thailand.
Afridi, who won the contest in the third round, is yet to lose a match in his professional career and now holds a record of 6-0-1.
The 27-year-old, who is known as the Markhor, also serves at the Rapid Response Force of the Sindh Police.
Afridi expressed his disappointment earlier in an exclusive interview with private tv for not being able to pique the interest of sponsors despite having a strong start to his career.
“Apart from cricket, sponsoring any other sport or athlete is considered a sin in Pakistan. When I defeated the Indian boxer [Israr Usmani], Sindh government and many other individuals promised cash prizes and other rewards but none of that materialized,” he said.
“I want to become a five-star boxer like Amir Khan for instance. I want to be ranked among the top 10 boxers in the world. If someone steps up and supports me, I promise to achieve this feat as well,” he added.
Moreover, Pakistan’s first professional female boxer Roma Yousuf beat her Thai opponent Pachia Panidda in a grassroot promotional boxing match.
