Mobile internet services have begun to be partially restored in Mirpur and surrounding areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) after a prolonged disruption of approximately 47 days, marking the first signs of renewed digital connectivity in the region.
According to sources, only cellular data services have been restored at this stage. Wired broadband and Wi-Fi internet services remain unavailable, and users will have to wait longer for full internet connectivity.
Sources said the remaining internet services are expected to be restored gradually once billing-related administrative processes and other necessary technical formalities are completed.
The communications blackout began on June 5, 2026, following a wave of protests in support of demands put forward by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). The committee had called for a long march to Muzaffarabad on June 9.
During the protests, an alleged attack on a senior JAAC leader led to violent clashes between demonstrators and security personnel deployed to protect public property and maintain order.
In response to the deteriorating security situation, the authorities declared the Action Committee an unlawful organization and, on the same day, suspended internet services across Azad Jammu and Kashmir without prior notice.
The phased restoration of mobile internet marks the first easing of the communications blackout, although complete restoration of broadband and Wi-Fi services has yet to be announced.
