KARACHI: A civil court has ordered Civil Hospital Karachi to pay Rs 6.5 million in damages to a woman who suffered severe health complications due to alleged negligence during surgery.
Senior Civil Judge South ruled in favour of the plaintiff, Najma Rizwan, who had filed a compensation suit against the hospital. In its order, the court directed the hospital administration to pay the compensation amount to the victim within 60 days.
According to the petitioner’s lawyer, Najma Rizwan was admitted to Civil Hospital Karachi on November 3, 2015, for childbirth. She underwent surgery at the hospital where her baby was delivered, and was discharged on November 6, 2015.
The counsel submitted before the court that soon after her discharge, the woman’s health started to deteriorate. She complained of persistent abdominal pain and swelling in her body.
When she sought treatment at another medical facility, examination revealed that a wrong surgical procedure had been performed at Civil Hospital.
The lawyer argued that due to negligence during the surgery, the woman developed several other diseases and suffered prolonged physical distress.
After completing the hearing of arguments from both sides, the court accepted the plaintiff’s claim and ordered Civil Hospital Karachi to pay Rs 6.5 million as damages to Najma Rizwan.
