KARACHI: As the spirit of Eid-ul-Adha begins to take hold across the country, the Awam Dost Maweshi Mandi at the Northern Bypass has entered its ninth day of operations with a significant influx of livestock and a robust upgrade to its utility management.
Known as a primary hub for sacrificial animals in the region, the market is witnessing a steady arrival of stock from key agricultural and pastoral belts, including Hub in Balochistan, Rahim Yar Khan in Punjab, Jacobabad in Sindh, and local farms within Karachi.
According to Market Administrator Tariq Tanoli, the number of sacrificial animals stationed at the facility has now officially crossed the 2,000 mark, emphasizing that the administration is focused on maintaining high standards of care to ensure the health of the livestock remains a priority as the market grows. To combat the soaring temperatures and meet the physiological needs of the animals, a comprehensive water supply network has been activated across every block.
Manager of Water Supply, Bashir Ahmed, confirmed that workers are stationed across the site 24 hours a day to ensure uninterrupted delivery. He noted that three massive browsers, each holding 10,000 gallons, have been installed for primary storage, while mobile 1,000-gallon tankers are deployed for continuous circulation through the various sectors.
In a move to support traders, the market provides water free of charge based on specific daily quotas. Large animals are allotted 30 liters per head, while small animals receive 8 liters. The administration is utilizing a regulated approach to ensure fair distribution, providing water strictly according to the animal count listed on each trader’s official registration card.
As the makeshift city at the Northern Bypass expands, the Awam Dost Mandi management maintains that they have no shortage of resources and are fully equipped to handle the increasing volume of livestock in the lead-up to the festive season.
