Improved power generation eases peak-hour supply

ISLAMABAD: Electricity supply during peak hours has begun to improve due to increased power generation in the country, with load-shedding now largely restricted to high-loss areas, the Power Division said on Wednesday.

According to a spokesperson, enhanced water releases from dams — driven by provincial demand — helped generate 5,125 megawatts of electricity during peak hours. In addition, around 400MW of electricity was transmitted from the southern region to the central grid, supported by improved grid stability.

The spokesperson said distribution companies managed to maintain relatively stable supply despite higher demand on Tuesday night, limiting load management to between one and two hours in most areas.

However, load-shedding will continue on feeders with higher losses in line with the government’s policy of “economic load management,” the official said, adding that this mechanism is separate from peak-time load management.

The spokesperson further said that peak-hour load management could be eliminated with improved availability of liquefied natural gas (LNG). At present, power plants with a combined capacity of 5,500MW remain non-operational due to LNG shortages.
