In another positive development for Pakistan, the Gwadar Port is moving closer to becoming a regional marine fuel hub after Dutch energy giant Vitol launched bunker fuel supply operations at the deep-sea port, offering shipping companies an alternative to traditional refueling locations in the Gulf.
Vitol Bunkers, the marine fuels division of Netherlands-based Vitol Group, began operations at Gwadar this week following increased demand from shipping companies seeking alternative fuel supply routes amid rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, according to Arab News.
For decades, regional bunkering activity has been dominated by ports such as Fujairah and Khor Fakkan in the United Arab Emirates. However, growing security concerns in the Gulf have encouraged shipowners and charterers to explore additional refueling options outside the region’s main maritime routes.
Recent military tensions involving the United States and Iran, along with threats of disruption to regional energy exports, have increased uncertainty for commercial shipping operations and prompted companies to reconsider their logistics strategies.
Vitol reportedly began its Gwadar service by supplying 2,500 tons of Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) to an LNG vessel on July 14.
The company is also working to expand its customer base and establish Gwadar as a reliable bunkering destination.
