Twenty-one former international cricket captains have written to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, appealing for medical treatment for former Pakistan captain and Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The former captains said recent developments appeared to fall short of a Supreme Court directive ordering Khan’s examination by a medical board that includes his personal physicians and sister, Dr Uzma Khan. They also called for weekly family visits to be honored.
The signatories urged authorities to allow the court-directed medical board to complete an independent assessment, particularly regarding reports of vision loss in Khan’s right eye, ensure uninterrupted family visits and provide any recommended treatment without delay.
The latest letter is the captains’ second appeal to Sharif in six months. Fourteen former captains had previously raised concerns over Khan’s health following reports of an eye condition.
The signatories include Michael Atherton, Alex Blackwell, Allan Border, Michael Brearley, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Alastair Cook, Michael Gatting, Sunil Gavaskar, Lee Germon, Adam Gilchrist, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Clive Lloyd, Kapil Dev, Arjuna Ranatunga, Andrew Strauss, Dilip Vengsarkar, Steve Waugh and John Wright.
The former cricketers said they were speaking as former colleagues and rivals rather than politicians and were not seeking to interfere in Pakistan’s legal processes.
