MUMBAI: Legendary actor Dilip Kumar’s was buried with full state honours in Mumbai on Wednesday. The actor passed away early today at the age of 98.
Dilip Kumar’s burial was held Juhu Qabrastan in Santacruz. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray declared a state funeral for the icon of Hindi cinema.
Bollywood actors such as Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi and Vidya Balan visited Dilip Kumar’s residence earlier in the day to condole his death. Thackeray also met the actor’s wife Saira Banu to pay his respects.
The actor’s official Twitter account shared, “With a heavy heart and profound grief, I announce the passing away of our beloved Dilip Saab, few minutes ago. We are from God and to Him we return.”

The veteran actor suffered from advanced prostate cancer that had spread to other organs of his body. Doctors said the cancer spread made it difficult to treat him.
One of the cornerstones of Hindi cinema, Dilip Kumar was known for his charismatic screen presence and his impeccable acting that has since inspired generations. Dilip Kumar was one of the key pillars in making Hindi cinema flourish and taking it all over the world.
Some of his most notable works include Naya Daur, Madhumati, Ganga Jumna, Ram aur Shyam, Mughal-e-Azam, Shakti, Mashaal, Kranti among many others. Dilip Kumar is survived by his wife veteran actress Saira Banu.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled Dilip Kumar’s death in a post on Twitter. “Dilip Kumar Ji will be remembered as a cinematic legend. He was blessed with unparalleled brilliance, due to which audiences across generations were enthralled. His passing away is a loss to our cultural world. Condolences to his family, friends and innumerable admirers. RIP,” read PM Modi’s tweet.
From the sports world, cricketers Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh took to Twitter to condole the actor’s death. “Today, an icon who was loved by generations passes away. Rest in peace Dilip ji. My condolences to the family (sic),” Virat wrote.
Lata Mangeshkar was heartbroken by the news of Dilip Kumar’s demise. The singer considered the late actor her brother. “Yusuf Bhai has left his little sister. His demise feels like end of an era. I am not able to grasp this news. I am very sad and at a loss of words. He has left her with memories and words (sic),” she wrote on Twitter.
